Movie Reviews

A place to post some Movie Reviews as I tend to watch and study a lot of Movies.

Life of Pi (2012)
Yes when I originally saw the trailer for this I thought, 'as if I'd ever watch a movie with a fake CGI tiger!' And yet, I did. And it was wonderful! I shouldn't be such a harsh critic before actually seeing a movie, but the CGI work in this film is incredible, immaculate and enjoyable. You will fall for the 'tiger' and really believe it's real. I don't think I've seen a somewhat fairy tale film ring so believable. I can see why it has won so many awards and has a loveable reputation. Pi is a young man who finds himself an orphan, shipwrecked at sea and left with one animal he has been told from a very young age, he should stay away from. You'll leap with glee to find that this plot is mythical too! Give it a go!

Argo (2012)
Wow! I didn't know how good of a director Ben Afleck is! This movie is nail-biting. And I mean, out of your seat yelling at the tv screen nail-biting. Okay, let's not picture that kind of scenario, but you get the idea. With a plot that takes you on many swirls and twirls, this one will leave you guessing 'will they really make it?'. Set in parts of the US and Iran, this story is about six US embassy workers who disguise as a film crew in order to escape Iran. That's it, put simply. With an underlying jaunt of political debates and bridging the gap between two nations, this is both an adventure of a film and thriller.

Little Voice (1998)
When I first saw the cover of this movie I was automatically uninterested. I figured, "oh it's another one of those singing movies", only to find I was so wrong. This is a beautiful feel-good British comedy sparked by a small woman's big voice. Nicknamed 'Little Voice' by her Mother, she is an intriguing character with a sweet personality and love for singing and listening to her favorite records (and I mean, real old-school records from back in the day).  As with most great singers, they are only really discovered by singing in public- which Little Voice has never sung outside of the comfort of her own bedroom.

Quirky, cute and absolutely hilarious (and I mean, very hilarious..I think I pressed rewind a number of times to re-watch parts), this is a must-see pick me up comedy or a night in!

Machine Gun Preacher (2012)
Yes, the title of this film may seem misleading but with thrills and spills, you will only understand the title by watching this movie. I'm a huge humanitarian aid supporter, having served in Thailand as a English Teacher and Child Carer in HIV/Aids Orphanages, I've been at the forefront of fighting for those without a voice. Though not to the same extent of 'The Machine Gun Preacher', I am constantly blown away by such dedication to the rights of others.

This movie has many ups and downs, a story about Sam Childers, a Preacher who dedicates his life to rescuing children throughout the depths of East Africa. There is an abundant amount of action scenes capturing the fast paced lifestyle as you venture through East Africa with him. He builds a school right in the path of a 'war' zone, he uses his guns to defend others, he takes risks that make you want to get up out of your chair and cheer him on not to mention save all the children at risk of having their lives taken by the Notorious Kony.

If you're all about adventure- I'd pick this.

Lincoln (2012)
This review could be slightly bias masked by my admiration for Abraham Lincoln, however there is no denial as to why this movie won so many awards.

With gorgeous cinematography and formal language used delicately to lace its time period portrayal, we are immediately drawn into these warm characters. Actor Daniel Day-Lewis brings a riveting performance as one of the most heroic figures in American History. Alongside him, Sally Field suited as the gregarious life partner, Mary Lincoln, is a role that puts a whole new meaning into Lincolns life outside of 'politics'.

If you're looking for a story line with more reality to it rather than sugar sprinkled then this movie is for you. However the use of the more literate forms of language and correct English can at times mean that you need to pay extra attention while viewing.

This movie is heavily political but for me right to the tee on just how the Civil War plays out in my head. Horses in battle, beautiful cinematography, divided opinions, a realistic story line and Lincoln's warm heart is what captivates me throughout this movie.
